Advantages of Iron Oxide Desulfurizers

March 15, 2024Oct 31, 2025

The following are the main advantages of iron oxide desulfurizers:

1. Core Advantage: Low Cost

This is the most prominent advantage of iron oxide desulfurizers.

Low Raw Material Cost: Its main active component is iron oxide (Fe₂O₃), which is widely available and much cheaper than zinc oxide (ZnO).

Simple Preparation: This makes the final product very competitively priced, making it particularly suitable for treating large volumes of air or cost-sensitive applications.

2. High Efficiency at Room Temperature (Low Temperature)

Iron oxide desulfurizers exhibit high desulfurization activity within a temperature range of 20°C - 60°C.

This characteristic makes it ideal for purifying gases such as city gas, biogas, coke oven gas, and natural gas, as these gases are typically transported and processed at or slightly above ambient temperature, requiring no additional heating and saving energy.

3. Renewability (Under Specific Conditions)

This is a key difference between it and single-use zinc oxide desulfurizers.

Regeneration Principle: Saturated iron oxide (mainly in the form of Fe₂S₃) can undergo a regeneration reaction upon contact with oxygen, reverting to iron oxide and elemental sulfur: 2Fe₂S₃ + 3O₂ → 2Fe₂O₃ + 6S

Benefits of Regeneration:

Extended Lifespan: Through multiple "adsorption-regeneration" cycles, the total lifespan of the desulfurizer is significantly extended.

Reduced Operating Costs: Reduces the frequency of desulfurizer replacement and the amount of waste agent to be disposed of.

Note: The regeneration process requires strict control of oxygen concentration and temperature; otherwise, "burn-off" may occur, leading to deactivation of the desulfurizer.

4. High Desulfurization Accuracy (within applicable range)

Under normal temperature conditions, high-quality iron oxide desulfurizers can reduce the H₂S concentration in gas to 1-5 ppm or even lower, which is sufficient for many industrial and domestic applications.

5. Environmentally Friendly and Resource-Recovery
The environmental impact of waste iron oxide desulfurizers is less than that of zinc-containing waste, and treatment is relatively simple.

During the regeneration process, the byproduct is elemental sulfur (S), which can be recovered as a chemical raw material, achieving resource recycling and possessing certain economic value.

Main Application Areas
Based on the above advantages, iron oxide desulfurizers are widely used in:

Biogas Desulfurization: This is currently one of the most mainstream applications, used to purify H₂S in biogas to protect generator sets or purification equipment.

City gas and coke oven gas purification.

Gas treatment in small and medium-sized fertilizer plants.

Preliminary desulfurization at natural gas wellheads.
